Abstract

Performance issues with the Water Analyzer used to monitor discharge water quality were identified in the EGCS installed on the MV Anna Schulte. These issues included reduced sensor sensitivity, suboptimal maintenance and calibration, sample flow disruptions, and crew operational errors. These conditions resulted in inaccurate measurements of pH, turbidity, and hydrocarbon content, potentially compromising EGCS effectiveness and compliance with MARPOL Annex VI regulations. This study aims to analyze the causes of these Water Analyzer performance issues, their consequences, and the measures taken to address them. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, documentation review, and literature study. Data validity was verified through source, method, and time triangulation. The findings indicate that these issues compromised the accuracy of pH, turbidity, and hydrocarbon measurements, thereby potentially reducing EGCS effectiveness and compliance with MARPOL Annex VI. Remedial measures included sensor cleaning, periodic calibration, sample flow inspections, and enhancing crew competence.
