Abstract

This study investigates the effect of solenoid actuator failure on the performance of the steering gear system of KMP DLN NUSANTARA. The steering gear system converts steering commands from the bridge into rudder movement, ensuring safe and accurate vessel maneuvering. Failure of the solenoid actuator disrupts hydraulic oil flow to the steering actuator, resulting in degraded steering performance. Qualitative descriptive method was employed. Data were collected through onboard observations, interviews with ship personnel, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results reveal that solenoid actuator failure is mainly caused by oil seal wear, spring fatigue, internal mechanical resistance, unstable hydraulic pressure, elevated temperature and vibration, hydraulic oil contamination. These conditions reduce steering responsiveness, decrease rudder movement stability and steering angle accuracy, and restrict hydraulic fluid flow. Corrective actions include component disassembly, internal inspection, cleaning, replacement of worn parts, proper reassembly, and functional testing. Preventive measures involve periodic hydraulic oil inspection, scheduled preventive maintenance, and continuous monitoring of steering system operation. The study concludes that the condition of the oil seal, spring, and hydraulic oil significantly influences the reliability of the solenoid actuator and the overall performance of the steering gear system.
