Damage to inlet and outlet valves can disturb the combustion process and reduce the reliability of a ship's diesel generator. This study aimed to analyze the causes of inlet and outlet valve damage on Diesel Generator No. 3 aboard MV. Golden Rejeki, identify its effects on engine performance, and describe the corrective actions carried out. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were obtained through direct observation during sea practice, interviews with engine-room personnel, and documentation of inspection and repair activities. The data were analyzed through systematic organization, reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed carbon deposits and wear on the inlet valve, while the outlet valve had a burned surface and a cracked spindle. The valve seat also showed an uneven contact surface and leakage. The damage was associated with high operating temperature, carbon deposits, component wear, and less-than-optimal periodic inspection. Its effects included increased exhaust-gas temperature to 460°C, reduced compression, unstable engine operation, increased vibration, and declining generator output. Repairs consisted of cylinder-head overhaul, component replacement, carbon cleaning, valve grinding/lapping, leakage testing, and valve-clearance adjustment. After repair, the generator operated stably and its monitored parameters returned to normal.
