Abstract

With 17,000 islands, Indonesia is an archipelagic country important for life, economy, government, defense, and security. Therefore, ports play a crucial role in shipping operations. This study aimed to see how idle time affects coal loading performance at Dry Bulk Pier 02 of Pulau Baai Port, Bengkulu, one of Indonesia's public ports. Qualitative descriptive research collected data through direct observation, interviews, documentation, and literature studies. The results of the study showed that idle time has a significant impact on the decline in coal loading operation performance. Idle time reduces ship working time (while at the mooring) and coal loading performance. Because of this incident, the waiting time for ships anchored in the port pool becomes longer. As a result, the shipping company has to pay more for ship operations while in port. This study found that disruption of loading and unloading equipment, ship delays, and stormy weather are some causes of idle time. To overcome this problem, they suggest improving equipment maintenance, optimizing ship schedules, and providing backup equipment.
